IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Choose?
Short answer: both IELTS and PTE Academic are widely accepted by universities and immigration authorities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and beyond. If you want faster results and a fully computer-scored test, PTE usually suits you better. If you’re more comfortable with a human examiner for speaking and a test format with decades of universal recognition, IELTS is the safer default. The right choice depends on your test-taking style more than which one is “easier.”

Turnaround time
This is one of the biggest practical differences. PTE Academic results are typically available within about 48 hours of your test. IELTS results usually take longer — computer-delivered IELTS is generally faster (a few days) than the traditional paper-based version (up to about two weeks). If you’re working against a tight application deadline, this alone can decide which test makes sense for you.
Which test suits which kind of student
- Choose PTE if: you’re a fast, confident speaker who doesn’t mind talking into a microphone rather than to a person, you want your results quickly, and you prefer a scoring system with no perceived subjectivity.
- Choose IELTS if: you speak better in a natural conversation than into a microphone, you want the option of face-to-face interaction during speaking, or your target university/visa route has a stated preference for IELTS specifically.
Check acceptance before you commit
Both tests are broadly accepted for study and immigration purposes across major destinations, but individual universities, visa categories, and professional registration bodies can have their own specific requirements. Always confirm the current accepted test (and minimum score) directly with your target university or visa authority before booking — acceptance policies do change.
