How to Prepare for the Duolingo English Test in 4 Weeks
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a computer-adaptive test, which means the questions get harder or easier in real time based on how you’re answering. It’s taken online, results are usually ready within two days, and it’s now accepted by thousands of universities worldwide as an alternative to IELTS or TOEFL. If your test date is a month away, here’s a realistic week-by-week plan to get ready.
Week 1: Diagnose and build your foundation
Start with a full practice test under timed conditions so you know your real starting point — not the score you assume you’ll get. Use the result to identify whether your weak spot is vocabulary, grammar, or simply test-taking speed.
- Spend most of this week on core vocabulary and grammar accuracy, since these feed into almost every question type on the test.
- Get comfortable with the test format itself: fill-in-the-blank passages, yes/no word recognition, and short spoken/written prompts.
- Set up a distraction-free space and a working webcam/microphone now — the DET is proctored remotely, and last-minute tech issues cost candidates real time on test day.
Week 2: Reading and listening sub-skills
- Practice skimming short passages for main ideas before answering detail-level questions.
- Work on recognizing real English words quickly — the vocabulary-matching questions reward speed and accuracy together.
- Do daily listening practice with varied accents, since the test doesn’t stick to one accent.
Week 3: Writing and speaking under time pressure
This is where most last-minute candidates lose marks, simply because they haven’t practiced speaking or writing against a countdown timer.
- Practice the writing prompts with a strict time limit and read your response back for grammar and structure.
- Record yourself answering speaking prompts, then listen back for hesitation, filler words, and clarity.
- Focus on organizing a clear, direct answer first, then supporting it with 2–3 points — clarity scores higher than complexity.
Week 4: Full practice tests and review
- Take at least two more full-length practice tests under exact test-day conditions.
- Review every mistake and ask why it happened, not just what the correct answer was.
- In the final few days, taper down to light review — vocabulary flashcards and short speaking drills — rather than cramming new material.
